I joined Guided By Voices’ Hot Freaks club a few weeks back. It’s pretty damn cool: For your annual fee of $100 USD, you get an email every week with a link to stream or download exclusive content — new songs, rarities, entire live shows, demos, etc. So far, in the first eight weeks, I’ve received something like 120 songs — including half a dozen cuts that seem to be from their upcoming album Mirrored Aztec, which the band just announced. Based on the songs I’ve heard — and the official preview Haircut Sphinx, which you can check out above — it should be the latest in a long line of keepers from the ever-reliable Robert Pollard and co. Speaking of long lines, Mirrored Aztec is just one of more than 50 new albums I heard about in the past day or so.
