Late-Night TV Music (A Cappella Edition) | May 27, 2020

David Crosby and the Star Wars cast raise their voices on the airwaves.

Some people say there are no coincidences. If that’s true, how in the hell do you explain the fact that Wednesday’s late-night TV musical performances consisted of not one but two different a cappella performances? First up, you had the legendary David Crosby offering his confrontational classic What Are Their Names — which originally appeared on his 1971 solo debut If I Could Only Remember My Name — on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Then, over on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, you had Fallon, The Roots and assorted members of the Star Wars universe  — including the late great Carrie Fisher, which suggests this clip has been around for a while or CGI effects have really advanced — all teaming up to sing the series’ soaring signature theme. If that wasn’t a coincidence, the late-night TV music gods are more powerful than I have assumed until now. But really, I don’t care who or what was behind that dynamic duo of outstanding performances. I would just like to see more of it. Ball’s in your court, TV gods.
