Death Tops Today’s New Album Announcements

The Grim Reaper is trending thanks to a slate of upcoming posthumous releases.

Death often seems to come in threes. But this is the first time I’ve spotted the Grim Reaper trending in the album release feed. Even worse: He’s leading a gang of four. Topping the list is late rapper Mac Miller and his posthumous release Circles, which comes out Jan. 17. The album was reportedly unfinished when the rapper died in 2018, but collaborator Jon Brion went on to complete the disc, a companion piece to his Swimming album. Second up: Night Sweats frontman Nathaniel Rateliff’s solo set And It’s Still Alright, inspired and informed by the death of the band’s producer and his longtime friend Richard Swift. It arrives on Valentine’s Day, sweetly enough. Thirdly: Philippe Cerboneschi, the surviving member of French house duo Cassius, will pay tribute to recently deceased partner Philippe Zdar by releasing their final production, a remix of Florious’s I’m Not Defeated. Nice coincidence, that. And finally, today would have been David Bowie’s 73rd birthday — so it seems like a fine time for his label to announce two new releases: 1 | The rarities EP Is It Any Wonder, which will be issued one song at a time over the next six weeks, starting with a 1996 version of The Man Who Sold The World (above); 2 | The EP Changes Now Bowie, which will feature rehearsals for Bowie’s 50th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden (also in 1996). It come out on Record Store Day, April 18. Of course, there are plenty of other discs coming out between now and then. Scroll down to see all of today’s additions, and bop over to the Upcoming Releases page to check out the entire list.
