Late-Night TV Music (A Little Better Edition) | Nov. 12, 2019

Danny Brown, Cold War Kids, Billy Lockett & Old Dominion take it up a notch.

Ask you shall receive. Every now and then, anyway. After sifting through Monday’s mediocre musical offerings, I asked the late-night TV gods to take it up a notch. They obliged on Tuesday with a few slightly more interesting performances. Idiosyncratic Detroit rapper Danny Brown kicked off the night, living his Best Life — and yukking it up infectiously — on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Then we had Cold War Kids, unveiling the moody groover Complainer from their just-released disc New Age Norms — the first in a planned trilogy of albums — on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Meanwhile, The Late Late Show With James Corden introduced British balladeer Billy Lockett and his tender piano number Hard Act to Follow, while Jimmy Kimmel Live appeased the country-pop crowd with Old Dominion and their upbeat Make It Sweet. Could it have been any better than that? Well, duh. Of course it could. But it could have been a lot worse. And some days, that’s the best you can get. There’s a lesson in there somewhere, methinks. But I’m too busy and tired to puzzle it out. Anyway, fingers crossed that onward and upward is the trend this week. Stay tuned.
