Late-Night TV Music (Comeback/Kid Edition) | Sept. 5, 2019

Tanya & Brandi team up for a triumphant appearance; O-Town, not so much.

For every comeback you welcome, there’s another you don’t. That was the message of Thursday’s late-night TV music segments. On the plus side of the equation: The triumphant return of country badass Tanya Tucker — aka the Marianne Faithfull of Nashville — delivering Wheels of Laredo with an assist from Highwomen member Brandi Carlile on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. And seeing Tucker maul Fallon at the end of her segment was almost as cool as watching her sing the track, which appears on both her new album While I’m Livin’ and the just-released Highwomen disc. On the other side of the comeback coin: The men of former boy band O-Town, presenting their cheeky dance-pop ditty Off on The Late Late Show With James Corden, while backed by unclothed mannequins and faceless female dancers. For a less creepy experience, watch rising star Clairo, who made a decent debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live with the moody I Wouldn’t Ask You, from her recently released Immunity album. She’s welcome to come back anytime.
