Late-Night TV Music (Synchphonic Edition) | Feb. 4, 2019

Beck and The Band's Visit bring symphonic synchronicity to late night.

You can call it coincidence. You can call it synchronicity. You can call it an alignment of the stars. All I know is that for some reason, there seems to be some sort of cosmic connection between the late-night talk show music segments. On Monday, the theme was symphonic and civilized. Start with The Late Late Show With James Corden, where the ever-mellow Beck performed a sweeping cover of ’80s electronica outfit Colourbox’s classic Tarantula — an idea (or at least an arrangement) supposedly inspired by Alfonso Cuaron’s Oscar-nominated Netflix film Roma — with the L.A. Philharmonic (and assists from Feist and Bat For Lashes). Then head over to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where Katrina Lenk and the cast of Broadway musical The Band’s Visit performed a scaled-down but still sophisticated version of Omar Sharif. Not into the whole string scene? Your best (well, only) bet was Jimmy Kimmel Live, where Margo Price dished up the country-rocker Cocaine Cowboys and the fittingly sombre ballad Loner. Come back tomorrow to see what the music gods might have in store.
