Late-Night TV Music (Christmas Boulder Edition) | Dec. 18, 2018

The onslaught of holiday music on the nightly talk shows begins in earnest.

There’s no use fighting it. You can’t win. Christmas is barrelling toward us like the giant boulder in Raiders of the Lost Ark. And with it comes the onslaught of Christmas music on the late-night shows. The pageant kicked off in earnest Tuesday night — and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was first off the mark, of course. The eager-to-please host reunited with old SNL pals Horatio Sanz, Chris Kattan and Tracy Morgan for the zippy ditty I Wish It Was Christmas Today — with help from Ariana Grande (more on her in a minute). Also hamming it up for the holidays were St. Paul & The Broken Bones, who donned festive garb and revamped Louis Armstrong‘s ‘Zat You Santa Claus? as the fake snow fell on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Then, on The Late Late Show With James Corden, Gwen Stefani (who seems to be morphing into Sarah Jessica Parker by the second, but that’s beside the point) kept it Supreme-ly classy with her Motown-style number You Make It Feel Like Christmas. Of course, for those who refuse to accept the inevitable, there were a couple of Yuletideless offerings: Skylar Grey delivered the Aquaman love ballad (there are three words I never thought I’d type) Everything I Need on Jimmy Kimmel Live. And Ariana Grande (told you I’d get back to her) debuted her romantic number Imagine (not to be confused with the John Lennon classic) later on Fallon. Trying to imagine a world where this doesn’t continue all week? Forget it, pal. Just lie back and let the boulder do its thing. It’s easier that way. Trust me.
