Late-Night TV Music (Old & New Edition) | Dec. 3, 2018

Hootie & Rufus look back while Phosphorescent lights the way forward.

Everything comes back. And I do mean everything. Want more proof? Look no further than Monday’s late-night TV music lineup. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon featured the return of none other than the universally (and quite rightly) reviled Hootie & The Blowfish, who resurrected their 1994 hit Only Wanna Be With You to hype their 2019 reunion tour — which will probably sell out because at this point, people would pay $1,000 to eat a bag of toenails if it could make them forget the face-palming absurdity and endless indignity of modern existence for 90 goddamn minutes and take them back to a simpler time when the freaking Blowfish were on the radio and the entire world wasn’t constantly teetering on the brink of self-destruction. Or maybe that’s just me. Anyhoo, almost as vintage but far more pleasant, Rufus Wainwright elegantly resurrected his classic cut Shadows on Late Night With Seth Meyers. And for the remaining few who would actually like to hear some music written this decade, singer-songwriter Matthew Houck — a.k.a. Phosphorescent — visited Jimmy Kimmel Live with his band to play New Birth in New England from his latest album C’est La Vie. Get ahead of the pack and reserve those 20th-anniversary tickets now.
