BIRTHDAYS & ANNIVERSARIES

Monday, Nov. 19
Wish a happy 24th birthday to David Crosby‘s new liver — after destroying his old one with decades of alcohol and drug abuse, he underwent a transplant operation in Los Angeles on this day in 1994.

Tuesday, Nov. 20
Plug in your air guitar for two birthdays: Allman Brothers Band member Duane Allman was born on this day in 1946. A year later, Eagles and James Gang star Joe Walsh made his debut.

Wednesday, Nov. 21
In 1955, RCA Records purchased Elvis Presley‘s recording contract from Sam Phillips at Sun Records for the princely (or should we say kingly?) sum of $35,000. Coincidentally, 28 years later, Michael Jackson‘s 14-minute video for Thriller premiered in Los Angeles in 1983. Also premiering on this day: New Orleans fixture Dr. John (born in 1940) and Bjork (born in 1965).

Thursday, Nov. 22
In 1997, INXS singer Michael Hutchence was found dead in his hotel suite in Sydney. He had apparently hanged himself with his own belt.

Friday, Nov. 23
A king and a democracy: In 1956, a sheet metal worker was arrested after punching Elvis Presley at a hotel in Toledo. He claimed his wife’s love for Elvis had caused his marriage to break up. He was fined $19.60 but ended up being jailed because he was unable to pay it. And in 2008, 15 years after their last album, Guns N’ Roses finally released Chinese Democracy.

Saturday, Nov. 24
Two tragedies: On this day in 1991, Queen frontman Freddie Mercury died of complications from AIDS at his home in London — and KISS drummer Eric Carr died of complications from cancer in a New York hospital.

Sunday, Nov. 25
In 1969, John Lennon famously returned his MBE to The Queen, protesting the U.K.’s involvement in Biafra, American involvement in Vietnam, and his latest single Cold Turkey slipping down the charts. In 1976, The Band filmed their final concert in San Francisco for the film The Last Waltz.
