Jon Stancer | Not Far From The Truth: Exclusive Video Premiere

The Toronto singer-songwriter is tense but hopeful on his political new single.

This Just In: Jon Stancer is mixing pop and politics in the breaking-news video for his single Not Far From The Truth — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.

The ultra-topical clip starring “POTUS (and a few other wacky characters)” sets the Toronto singer-songwriter’s tense lyrics and conspiratorial vocals against an incongruously upbeat track built from a low-impact dance-floor groove, colourful ear-candy production and a singalong chorus. It’s a potent mix that reflects the composer’s (and much of the globe’s) current state of mind.

“Like millions of people around the world, I’ve been dismayed, angered, outraged and at times, terrified at what’s been happening in the U.S. over the last few years,” he says. “I, like so many, would very much like to see this president brought down — especially if he is as corrupt as he and many of his associates appear to be. I’m anxious to know what the … investigation reveals and as we may be getting closer to that, I thought now would be a good time to bring out this song.

“It’s a hopeful song. A little sinister sounding at moments, because so much surrounding ’45’ is. I wanted that to come across … and the fear. But the overall takeaway should be that the truth won’t be suppressed if the people demand it and the media is supported. Hopefully, it will set us all free.”

Not Far From The Truth is Stancer’s latest followup to his well-received 2017 debut album For The Birds, which found him dabbing his musical brush in many musical palettes. Produced by Jono Grant (John Southworth), the album features lush and lavish hook-laden power pop, connected by lyrical themes that touch on reclusiveness, regret, revision and rejuvenation.
