DIY Discovery | Sis

Hear stylistically substantial sounds from some superb San Franciscans.

Most of the music I hear is sent to me by labels and publicists. But there’s nothing like getting it straight from the source. Welcome to the latest instalment of DIY Discovery, where I introduce you to artists who have sent me their music directly (and who don’t suck — that’s definitely part of the deal too). If you’d like to get in on this action, no problemo: Just click here or go to the Submit Music page, fill out the form and hit send. Or email me directly here. I can’t promise I’ll feature you, but if you’re as awesome as you think you are, it could happen. You never know. But first, check out today’s stunning entry:

NAME: Sis

HOME: San Francisco, Calif.

LATEST RELEASE: The debut disc Euphorbia

MY PITHY DESCRIPTION: Materially ethereal yet stylishly substantial.

FOUR THOUGHTS ON THEIR MUSIC: 1) You’re gonna want headphones for this one. Good headphones. 2) The scenic sonic landscape paints a wide-screen art-pop netherworld of tones, timbres and textures that somehow contrast and complement each other simultaneously. It’s the very picture of creativity. 3) Subtly mixed and artfully treated, the soft-focus vocals are oh so quiet. And oh so irresistible. 4) Words of the day: Balance and juxtaposition. Organic vs. digital, warm vs cold, classical vs. cutting-edge, soothing vs. unnerving, flowing vs. clattery … there are two sides to all these stories. And you need to hear them all.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS: “San Francisco experimental project Sis has set up shop squarely in the realms of full-hearted poeticism, formulating powerful images focused around feelings over themes, poesy over experience, and experimentation over genre. Lead singer/multi-instrumentalist/lyricist Jenny Gillespie Mason dove into the new project with nothing but some rough ideas, an OP1 synthesizer, and a personal journal from which to draw ideas at her disposal. The result is an enigmatic and highly satisfying collusion of word and idea.

“Written and recorded at Tiny Telephone in San Francisco, Sis’s debut LP Euphorbia wrangles a mishmash of influences into a cohesive and broadly untried endeavor. Also featuring drummer Joe Adamik (Califone, Iron & Wine), percussionist Andrew Maguire (Mirah, Meernaa), bassist Jamie Riotto (John Vanderslice, red steppes), guitarist Carly Bond (Meernaa, DRMS), and producer/multi-instrumentalist engineer Rob Shelton (John Vanderslice, Mohsen Namjoo), Euphorbia plays with slippery synth lines, spirited vocal stylings, and lush instrumentals in a metrical, elegant, and thoughtfully unpredictable effort.”
