Mike Posner and Joey Purp bring pleasant surprises to the late-night scene.

Lots of people claim to hate surprises. But everybody likes good surprises. And there were definitely a couple of them to be found amid Monday’s late-night music performances. The first and biggest of the evening had to be the unveiling of the new model Mike Posner. You may remember him as the poppy guy who took a pill in Ibiza. Well, now he’s the weird-bearded guy with the afro who rocked The Late Late Show with James Corden with his new single Song About You — featuring both a sax player and a flautist. It was all so weird I had to double-check that it really was Mike Posner and not some wacky Will Ferrell bit. So you might need a pill or two yourself before clicking on the clip above. The other interesting surprise also involved an unexpectedly rocking cut — this time from Joey Purp, who brought along Wu-Tang majordomo RZA and a dynamic drummer to help him deliver his song Godbody Pt. 2 on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Next to them, watching L.A. indie-popsters Transviolet play their cut Undo on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert was, um, uneventful. More bad news: For some reason, Australian indie-rocker Courtney Barnett‘s performance of Crippling Self Doubt And a General Lack of Self Confidence on Late Night With Seth Meyers was MIA on YouTube this morning. Um, surprise?
