Late-Night TV Music (Grown-up Edition) | Oct. 3, 2018

Jim James, Cat Power, Nathaniel Rateliff, Arctic Monkeys & more bring some mature sounds to the tube.

Often the late-night shows do it for the kids. On Wednesday night it seemed they were going for a slightly older demographic with their musical choices. Case in point: My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James, who unplugged on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to deliver some classic-sounding folk sincerity in his new song Over and Over (above). Then came Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, who shifted into old-school Southern soul mode with Tearing at the Seams on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Further down the dial, Chan Marshall — better known as Cat Power — unveiled her gorgeous new number Woman on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The Kills tore through Sour Cherry on Conan. Even Alex Turner and his Arctic Monkeys turned down the cheek for their rendition of the slowburning One Point Perspective on The Late Late Show with James Corden. Finally, over on Last Call With Carson Daly you got a double-shot of intimate balladry from singer-songwriter Aquilo, who performed Silhouette and Sorry live at Teragram Ballroom. No apology necessary.
