Indie Roundup | Four Songs (& One Doc) to Check Out Today

New video magic from Dan Mangan, Scenic Route to Alaska, Enter Shikari & more.

Every day, I get press releases from indie bands and labels with new songs, albums and videos to hype. Here’s the latest batch:

1 | Just in time for fall, Canadian singer-songwriter Dan Mangan is sharing the song Cold in the Summer, a Ron Sexsmith-like gem from his upcoming LP More or Less. SEZ THE PRESS RELEASE:Cold In The Summer is the quarter-life crisis,” he says. “The mid-30s father feeling simultaneously conflicted about having retired the wild young adventurer within and also overwhelmed with appreciation for the privilege and good fortune he has been afforded. I literally got a cold in the summer and thought: ‘This is dumb, I’m getting soft’.” Share his pain:

2 | Edmonton indie-rock trio Scenic Route to Alaska have released the live video for All These Thoughts, shot during a sold-out hometown show at the Starlite Room last month. SEZ THE PRESS RELEASE:All These Thoughts is from their latest LP Tough Luck out NOW via popTrip Records. The band are in the midst of North American tour in support of their latest release.” It’s the next best thing to being there:

3 | Miracle Fortress leader Graham Van Pelt continues to preview his Oct. 19 solo debut Time Travel with his third single Mountainside, a sweet synth-bloop number. SEZ THE PRESS RELEASE:Time Travel is a renewal of Van Pelt’s vows with dance music, and with the genre’s pulse of synthesized melancholy. It’s a heartrending rush, as emotionally direct as a sweaty, jaw-clenching 3AM hug.” Hold everything:

4 | Can’t get enough of Enter Shikari? You’re in luck; the British band are going widescreen with the release of Content 2.0, a 75-minute documentary and track-by-track breakdown of their fifth album The Spark. SEZ THE PRESS RELEASE:Content 2.0 is an in-depth exploration of the record, charting the path from early demos to full-blown album recordings of many of the key tracks on the album, featuring interviews with band members, candid in-the-studio footage shot during the recording of the album, and never-before seen live footage taken on tour following The Spark release.” Settle in for the duration:

5 | New Jersey garage-rock rappers Foster & The Pranksters recorded their EP La Honda in one 12-hour day, and to showcase it, they’re unveiling the aptly titled single Live As It Gets, featuring an assist from Royce Da 5’9″. SEZ THE PRESS RELEASE:La Honda was a spur-of-the-moment decision, borne of musical frustration, anxiety and a need to let our signature sound be heard,” Foster shares. “In Steve’s parents’ basement, we were able to perform every track, from a collection of songs we had written over the past year, from B-sides and cuts from our live set-list.” Pranks for the memories:
