Six Songs to Hear Today | Sept. 20, 2018

New tunage from Tom Petty, R.E.M., Mark Knopfler, Weezer, Mumford & more.

Another day, another slate of new entries for your playlist. Crack open today’s six-pack of songs:

1 | Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers pay tribute to his hometown on Gainesville, a shimmery folk-rocker from 1998’s Echo sessions that appears on their upcoming box set An American Treasure. The 60-song collection of unreleased fare and rarities comes out next week. Get your southern exposure above.

2 | R.E.M. offer up a sneak peek at their upcoming BBC box set — a crunchy version of the Green hit Orange Crush from the Mark and Lard radio show in 2003. The nine-disc R.E.M. At the BBC box set comes out Oct. 15, but you can wet your whistle now:

3 | Mumford and Sons have announced they’ll release their fourth album Delta on Nov. 16 — and hope to prime the pump with the pulsing roots-rock return to form Guiding Light. See it here:

4 | Guitar hero and Dire Straits founder Mark Knopfler will release his ninth album Down The Road Wherever on Nov. 9. The first step is the preview single Good On You Son, a typical slice of laid-back dad-rock laced with his dusty vocals, unmistakable fingerpicking and tasteful solos. If the shoe fits, wear it:

5 | Weezer unveil a new single called California Snow — aka sand, based on the accompanying visual. The pretty, hip-hop-flavoured pop-rocker appears on the soundtrack of the upcoming film Spell, which sounds too depressing to discuss in detail here. Especially when you could just hit the beach:

6 | Beck and Julian Casablancas of The Strokes covered Human League‘s Don’t You Want Me? during a concert in Lincoln, Neb., on Thursday night. What more do you need to know?
