Five Songs To Hear Today | Sept. 18, 2018

New tunage from Marianne Faithfull & Nick Cave, Slash, Cat Power, J Mascis & Joy Formidable.

Another day, another batch of new music to get you through. Here are five songs to stream:

1 | What could be better than a new cut from living legend Marianne Faithfull? How about one from Marianne Faithfull AND Nick Cave? That would be the awesomely titled The Gypsy Faerie Queen, the first single from the raggedly glorious vocalist’s upcoming album Negative Capability. She wrote the lyrics based on Shakespeare‘s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. He wrote the song and joins in on vocals. And the rest is history:

2 | Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators — my usual disclosure: I have known drummer Brent Fitz since we were teens — offer up the riff-rocker My Antidote to give you another sneak peek of their Sept. 21 album Living the Dream. Kicking off slowly and then building into a full-blown anthem, it’s a decent antidote for boredom. Ditto the psychedelic visuals in the video:

3 | J Mascis knows when to turn it up and when to turn it down. The Dinosaur Jr. frontman does the latter on his new folk-rock single Everything She Said, an acoustic guitar-driven lament to the end of a relationship. It comes from his upcoming solo album Elastic Days, due in November. Here’s the lyric video — with shots of J and a crow during the solos:

4 | I have seen Cat Power perform three times: The first time she bailed mid-set. The second time she made it to the end before profusely apologizing for no good reason and bolting. The last time she was in fine form, confidently delivering a whole set without a hitch. Let’s see which version returns in October with Wanderer, her first album in six years. To get you in the mood, here’s an interesting cover: A candle-lit piano-ballad version of Rihanna‘s Stay. There’s a joke in there somewhere, but I’m not going to make it.

5 | Finally, pint-sized guitar goddess Ritzy Bryan and The Joy Formidable have unleashed a video for their noisy new single The Better Me. It comes from their Sept. 28 album Aaarth. And If the rest of the album features the same blend of power and melody, count me in. Check it out up aaabove at the top of the page.
