Late-Night TV Music | Sept. 10, 2018

Poppy, Lykke Li, St. Paul & The Broken Bones and The Knocks bring the pop Apocalypse.

Welcome to the Apocalypse! Or at least the late-night TV equivalent. Coincidentally (or perhaps not), the musical numbers on Monday night’s chat shows all seemed to take a slightly dark and weird turn. And as usual, nobody was weirder than Internet cult-princess Poppy. Check out her performance of Time’s Up on James Corden‘s Late Late Show (above). Go-go dancers in glass tubes, scientists in gas masks, animated video screens, a throne and, worst of all, the return of platform shoes — if that doesn’t add up to the End Times, I don’t know what does. Except, perhaps, for Lykke Li’s grimly smouldering number Sex Money Feelings Die, which the trenchcoated vocalist brought to Late Night With Seth Meyers. Way to bring down the room, Lykke. At least St. Paul and the Broken Bones had the Jimmy Kimmel Live! crowd dancing to their doom with two doses of horn-spiked disco-funk: The southern gothic high-stepper GotItBad and the astronaut tale Apollo. And finally, speaking of doom, New York crew The Knocks visited The Late Show With Stephen Colbert — and enlisted Foster the People — to remind us we need to Ride or Die. Um, ride?
